SELKIRK, Idaho — A United States Forest Service Engine Captain died after being buried by an avalanche in Selkirk Mountain earlier this month, the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center (IPAC) confirmed.

54-year-old Lance J. Gidley went snowmobiling with three friends in the Selkirk Mountains on March 1. IPAC said the group exercised caution, and although there was an avalanche warning, Gidley had 25 years of riding experience.

“Although the group had been careful to stay out of harm’s way all morning, this final decision went against the plan,” said IPAC. [The second snowmobiler] Snowmobiler 2 described the group’s mood as “stoked” and having a great day. The ‘stoke’ of the day likely contributed to the quick decision that was fateful.”

Gidley and his friend decided to continue snowmobiling and according to IPAC, went to the upper basin. Gidley triggered the avalanche while turning at the top and was separated from his sled. IPAC confirmed he was buried 4 to 5 feet deep in the snow and ended up 75 feet from the toe.

His friend, who witnessed the start of the avalanche, ran downhill to avoid the avalanche and smashed into a tree, falling off of his sled. However, the avalanche stopped 30 feet uphill from his position. According to the IPAC, he wore an airbag but did not deploy it amidst the confusion.

The friend quickly detected Gidley’s beacon after the avalanche stopped and dug out Gidley’s head and chest from the snow. Gidley was not breathing and exhibited no signs of life.

“The deceased was a local USFS Engine captain, a coworker and friend to many IPAC staff members. He was an ambassador for snowmobiling in the local community, attended avalanche awareness courses and mentored many local riders. Many of us have recreated and learned a lot from him through the years. He was very involved with the local community and leaves behind a big legacy as well as a loving family, friends and USFS coworkers. He will be missed dearly,” said the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center.
