1 person dead after car falls off cliff into Columbia River

CRESCENT BAR, Wash. — One person is dead after their car drove off of a cliff 1,000 feet above the Columbia River.

According to a Facebook post from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received reports of a spotted car on a shale slide 100 feet from the shore of the Columbia River around 4:10 p.m. on May 18. One witness looked at the car and confirmed that the person was dead.

Responders came to the scene on a Sheriff’s Marine Unit boat. They were able to safely recover the body from the car in the river.

According to deputies, the car is believed to have fallen off a cliff around a radio tower sometime overnight.

Coroner Crag Morison is investigating this death. Deputies were helped by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, Washington Fish and Wildlife Police, Grant County Fire District 3, Grant County Coroner’s Office and Grant PUD.
