COLTON, Wash. – A 1,150-acre fire is still burning in the Snake River Canyon at Nisqually John Landing in southern Whitman County, with fire crews actively working to contain it.

The Nisqually John Fire ignited on June 14, around 8:38 a.m. and has already spread across 1,150 acres as of June 15 this morning.

Level 3 evacuations were in place but have since been lifted. Firefighters report all roads and the Snake River are open, though residents are advised to avoid these areas.

Firefighters said that a fire line has been established and was stopped there. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters anticipate scattered rain showers and humid temperatures may assist in reducing the fire’s intensity, but predicted winds could potentially cause further spread. State fire assistance has been activated under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan to aid local firefighters battling the Nisqually Fire in Whitman County, north of Clarkston.
