‘1923’ returns to Butte in October, offering locals a chance to be extras

BUTTE, Mont. – Residents of Butte have an exciting opportunity this October, as the famed prequel series to ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘1923,’ will return to the Mining City for filming.

Earlier this year, Butte officials were disheartened to learn that ‘1923’ would film its second season in Austin, Texas, rather than returning to Butte, as was planned before the Hollywood strike. However, the series will now revisit Butte for the first time since 2022.

During their initial six-month stay in 2022, the production team spent nearly $22 million on Butte-based businesses. Though this year’s visit will last just one month, it’s still expected to provide a substantial boost to the local economy.

“They will be putting money into groceries, rentals, and hotels,” said Kehli Hazlett, director of tourism for Butte-Silver Bow. “They also spent a lot of money on lumber building their sets, so we’re hoping that they’ll need to build a couple more sets again and hire some of our craftsmen here in town.”

The filming locations for ‘1923’ include the Butte Civic Center, a private ranch, and several spots uptown.

Additionally, the production team is looking for extras from the local community.

“We look out for people that said, ‘Oh, I had a part in this part, it should be in this episode,'” Hazlett said. “I know somebody who had a daughter that was in ‘1923’ the last time, and I watched out for her every time I watched. It was wonderful to have local people in the production.”

For those interested in applying to be an extra, all necessary information can be found at the Legacy Casting Facebook page.
