UPDATE: Dog Rescued from Newman Lake

Newman, the lab rescued from Newman Lake, has a new name and a new home for the holidays.  Early in the morning on Monday, December 12th,  neighbors around the lake heard a dog crying in distress after it had broken through the ice.  Unable to get out on his own, Newman (now Porter) had to be rescued.  One neighbor grabbed a plank of wood and pushed it as close to the dog as possible.  “The dog was so lethargic by the time we finally reached him,” said Elizabeth Huckaby, one of the rescuers.  “In a few more minutes he would have been gone.”

Porter’s new family describes him as very sweet, gentle and playful dog who is eager to learn and bond with his new family despite what he has been through. “We are very happy to have him in our family and grateful that he was rescued and brought to safety by people who did not hesitate to care for him,” said his new pet parents.  “When we heard his story and met him at the shelter, we knew we wanted to bring him home with us.”

Porter had no license or microchip for SCRAPS to use to find his original owners.  This adorable pup was held at SCRAPS several days to recover from his ordeal and to give his owner a chance to redeem him.  No owner showed up at SCRAPS to claim this wonderful dog despite the media attention.  Porter has adapted quickly to his new surroundings and loves to play fetch in the snow.
