CityGuide Companion: The Meeting of Lost Boys, Specialty Cocktails, and Classic TV

If you’re a connoisseur, you know that nothing pairs as well with specialty cocktails as classic television shows (trust us on this, we know what we’re talking about). For example, let’s say you’re hanging out at Lost Boys Garage Bar & Grill for a late lunch on a Monday afternoon (they’re open from 11:30am seven days a week ). You’re enjoying a Roast Beef & French Onion sandwich (with grilled onions, tender roast beef, and harvarti cheese, served with French Onion Au Jus) and watching an episode of Sanford & Son on one of the in-house flatscreen TVs. You think to yourself, what drink would go with the adventures of sarcastic, no-nonsense Fred Sanford and his constantly failing get-rich-quick schemes? Well a Backfire sounds pretty fitting, don’t you think? Hot coffee mixed with Yukon Jack, creme de cacao, and Westland Peated Whiskey certainly won’t ‘backfire’ on you the way Sanford’s schemes always did on him.

Need another example of the way drinks and classic TV pair so well together? Okay, new scenario: let’s say you’re in Lost Boys on a Thursday night. Most of the bar is playing Bent Trivia (show off your knowledge every week on TNT Thursday Trivia Night from 7-9pm) but your teammates stood you up. So instead you’re watching Wings, that great 90’s sitcom starring Tim Daly and Steven Weber as pilot brothers running a small island airline where hijinks often ensue, and nursing a Windscreen – a decadent cocktail with Spokane’s 21 Windows Gin, Green Chartreuse, muddled cucumbers, mint, topped off with ginger beer.

Around 7pm on Saturday nights Lost Boys is jamming with live musical acts. But what if you’re there for a late lunch or early dinner, say 4pm Saturday afternoon? You might be too early to hear Lyle Morse live on the patio (season and weather permitting) or Alex Forbes inside, but you’re just in time for a Jerry Lee Lewis Burger (1/3lb hand-pressed burger topped with smoked cheddar, a dollop of peanut butter, crisp onion, and lettuce), an episode of Addams Family on the in-house TV, and a Sazerac cocktail. In true New Orleans’ tradition, the Sazerac is made up of Dickel Rye Whiskey, Peychaud’s & Angostura bitters, a touch of lemon zest, a dash of simple syrup, and served up in an Absinthe coated glass. The Addams clan would appreciate the gothic flair of the Big Easy in the Sazerac’s recipe.

Friday nights are a time for unwinding from a long week, meeting up with friends, belting out showtunes during Karaoke at Lost Boys (please don’t belt out showtunes, there are so many other fabulous songs to sing), and partaking of some classic shows such as Maude, starring the one-of-a-kind Bea Arthur, and drinking an Edsel cocktail. While Maude is a little sweet, a little sour, and always finely aged, The Edsel embodies the same things, with it’s homemade sweet and sour mix, lemon-lime soda, triple sec, and Westland Sherrywood Aged Whiskey.

So as you can see (and connoisseurs could have already told you) nothing pairs quite like classic television programming with unique and tasty specialty cocktails. And Lost Boys Garage Bar & Grill, with its full menu of food items, extensive list of beers, wines, and cocktails, and regular schedule of events such as trivia, live music, sip n paint nights, and game day specials, happens to be the perfect place to experience this ‘cocktails and classic television show’ union.
