SPOKANE, Wash. – Assistant United States Attorney Russell E. Smoot will work his last day today, as he has decided to retire after 21 years of service.
Smoot, served in a variety of positions in his 21 years which included Criminal Chief for the Eastern District, First Assistant United States Attorney, Deputy Criminal Chief, Criminal Appellate Coordinator, and Anti-Terrorism / National Security Coordinator.
He was a very distinguished prosecutor, leading the charge against high-profile drug-trafficking organizations throughout the nation.
Smoot was a 1999 Gonzaga University graduate and worked to serve the people of Spokane and beyond.
In a press release from U.S Attorney Office, Attorney Waldref said, “Russ is one of the hardest working AUSAs in our District’s history. He will be sorely missed – his public service has been nothing short of incredible – from the cases he has tried to the leadership positions he held.”
