Police shoot, kill suspect after house fire in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – A man died in Spokane after a house fire led to a confrontation with police, resulting in a fatal shooting.

The call had come from a neighbor who had heard screams and noticed the fire.

Upon arrival, authorities worked to rescue anyone from the burning house, and suspected that arson was the cause of the fire.

After interviewing people inside the house, it was determined that the individual believed to be responsible was not present. However, during questioning, one man became uncooperative and began walking away.

Ignoring police orders, the man resisted detainment and opened fire on officers with a gun he had hidden on him.

Police returned fire and began life saving measures shortly after he was shot. Medical staff on scene also worked to save him but he died at the scene.

Following standard procedure, the officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave for the investigation. Body cameras were worn by the Spokane Police and captured the incident.

Moving forward, the Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team will handle the investigation.

There were no other injuries reported in the incident.
