SPOKANE, Wash. – If you plan on watching the solar eclipse today in the Pacific Northwest there are some precautions you should take in order to be safe.

With Spokane being in the 26% obscuration zone it can be tempting to not want to prepare with a smaller percentage at stake.

Solar eclipse glasses are important for viewing the eclipse no matter the range of obscuration. They protect your retinas from being damaged by the high intensity light from the sun.

Eclipse glasses provide a darkening that are 1,000 times darker than any pair of sunglasses could provide.

Retailers in Spokane that will be carrying solar eclipse glasses are Walmart, Lowe’s and Home Depot. Other retailers like local grocery stores may have some as well.

If you can’t get ahold of any solar eclipse glasses and want to view the eclipse another way without damaging your eyes the pinhole method is a great option.

If you poke a small hole into a piece of cardboard and project the sun behind you and through the hole and onto a piece of paper it will work as a projector.

No matter how you decide to get a look at this solar phenomenon it’s important to protect your eyes and get a safe look at it!
