OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will convene in Olympia next week to discuss new potential rules for cougar populations.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), rulemakers will discuss parameters for future cougar hunting seasons on April 19.

“The Commission will conclude Friday with a discussion about which elements to include in a draft rule and submit for public comment on cougar hunting seasons,” WDFW said.

The 2024 cougar hunting season began on Jan. 1 in Washington, and will conclude on April 30. WDFW has a network of regulations regarding cougar hunting which can be found on the department’s website.

In addition to cougar populations, policy experts will also discuss wolf, deer and salmon populations.

There will be an opportunity for public comment and the meetings will be streamed online.
