SPOKANE, Wash. — A roof collapsed on two firefighters while they were battling a large fire on Spokane’s South Hill Monday afternoon.
According to the Spokane Fire Department (SFD), the firefighters got out okay and aren’t seriously injured.
The fire started around 11:50 p.m. on April 29 in the 2800 block of East 29th Avenue. When SFD arrived, crews immediately observed heavy black smoke and flames.
Surrounding buildings were evacuated, and depending smoke, more could be evacuated. SFD said there is a local police prescient in the basement, and it is unclear if anyone was in there.
29th Avenue remains closed, and traffic has been redirected to Mt. Vernon Street. Fire crews ask that you avoid the area.
The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
