SPOKANE, Wash. – Two people died in a head-on crash on I-90 early Thursday morning, when a driver going the wrong way hit another car, according to Washington State Patrol (WSP).
WSP said the car was driving east on the westbound lanes of I-90 and hit a car going west near W90 Altamont.
The area has been shut down while crews assess the crash, and there’s a detour in place until it’s cleared.
The detour is near exit 283A onto Altamont along Second Avenue, and they expect the road to reopen around 6:30 a.m.
WSP is still looking into what caused the crash and they don’t know yet if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Law enforcement received a call just moments before the crash to report the wrong-way driver.
With a concrete median along the highway, law enforcement predicts the wrong-way driver probably got on the highway the wrong way through an off-ramp somewhere in downtown Spokane.
