Looking back at the Broadway play that featured Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Lilac City may be a long way from the Big Apple, but New Yorkers were transported to eastern Washington in 2010 when a Broadway play starring Christopher Walken took place in Spokane.

Entitled “A Behanding in Spokane,” the show is about a man whose hand was lobbed off in downtown Spokane trying to track down his missing appendage.

The play boasted an impressive cast including Walken, Sam Rockwell and Anthony Mackie.

Notably, the playwright who penned the play is Irish and has never made a public appearance in Spokane. It isn’t obvious why he chose to set the piece in the Inland Northwest.

Though the show is about the Lilac City, it does not seem to have ever been staged at a local theater.

From hosting Expo ‘74 to being the subject of a Broadway play, it is clear that Spokane has always punched above its weight.

For those hoping to support their local dramatists this summer, the Spokane Civic Theatre and Spokane Shakespeare Society both have busy schedules in coming months.
