SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane County Treasurer Michael Baumgartner may not be a city council member, but he is running for US Congress. The Republican candidate announced a press conference opposing a proposed levy funding lift from the mayor’s office on Tuesday.
The proposed levy would lift the current lid by $1 per $1,000 in assessed property value on Spokane properties and fund additional police and fire department funding
Baumgartner, , will hold a press conference alongside City Council Member Michael Cathcart opposing the tax increase.
Notably, the only other city council member who voted against the levy lid lift was fellow District 1 council representative Jonathan Bingle,
It is unclear whether Cathcart joining Baumgartner signals the city council member’s support of the county treasurer over Bingle.
Baumgartner is currently well ahead in fundraising and has attracted endorsements from several members of the state legislature.
