Man suspected of shooting nurse declared incompetent to stand trial

SPOKANE, Wash. – A man was declared unfit to stand for trial May 9.

Mitchell Chandler was arrested in Dec. 2022 for purportedly shooting an at-home nurse who was caring for his grandmother.

The Spokane County Superior Court declared Chandler incompetent on Friday, meaning he will not stand trial for the alleged conduct.

According to court documents, Chandler has undergone involuntary medication and three rounds of competency restoration, but still experiences delusions.

Chandler is now under a civil commitment order. While he will not stand trial, the incompetency ruling limits his previous civil rights of free movement and self determination.
