SPOKANE, Wash. – A legislative meeting on Monday will discuss a temporary ban on sub-division development housing in the Latah Valley area due to lack of resources.
The Spokane City Council will discuss the increased residential development specifically in the Grandview Thorpe neighborhood comparing it to the ratio of fire protection and public safety resources in the area.
“As we witness the continued threat of wildfire risk, this is an important step to prepare for a disaster response and provide the long-term planning that Latah residents deserve.” council member Paul Dillon said.
If passed it would ban acceptance, process, review, and/or approve new applications for preliminary short subdivisions or preliminary subdivisions for housing in the banned zone.
The city arguing that housing cannot expand without proper infrastructure.
If the ban is approved, it would be subject to a specified time frame or duration and would not affect applications that were counter-complete prior to the start date.
City Council will hold a public hearing on July 15, 2024, to determine if it will pass and to hear the communities concerns and questions.
