Moses Lake School District finds $1.6 million in bank account amid budget shortfall

MOSES LAKE, Wash. – Thursday evening, they addressed the discovery of $1.6 million dollars belonging to them in a U.S. bank account amid a budget shortfall and layoffs.

Trisha Schock with the North Central Educational Service District brought up the discovery while presenting to the board.

She attributed the discovery to a staff member finding it saying:

“A staff member brought it to our attention and said don’t you know we have this… and I said no!” Schock said.

Acting superintendent Carol Lewis said that the money had been there a “long time” and a majority of it came from the general account.

In the same meeting the board unanimously voted to approve loan reallocation from capital fund projects to cover its bills and payroll for the month of June.

The loan to cover June expenses was estimated at $1.5 million and will require a pay back within two years at a 5.85% interest rate.

Even with the new discovery and redistribution of loans the school district is not at a positive or break-even budget.

The school district will still be in a budget limbo that led to over 100 staff
