Youth psychiatric in-patient unit at Providence Sacred Heart set to close

SPOKANE, Wash. – Providence Sacred Heart closes the children’s in-patient unit for psychiatric disorders as they focus on more out-patient care.

The Providence Psychiatric Center for Children and Adolescents (PCCA) will close on September 7 as they transition into what they describe as an “investment in outpatient mental health care and resources for our community.”

In a statement, Providence said, “The primary reason for the unit closure is the ongoing shortage of inpatient psychiatrists that we see at the national, state, and local levels.”

Around 50 employees at Providence will be affected, and the HR team will work with them to help identify employment opportunities.

The PCCA addresses children ages 12-17 who have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, acute psychosis, and more that require inpatient hospitalization.

The outpatient mental health unit will be adding two new programs that will provide new resources to families and youth in crisis.
