WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. opening the possibility for the first Black and first South Asian woman to secure a major party nomination for the presidency in history.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was the in 2016, and former President Barack Obama in 2008.

If Harris secures the nomination, she will face off against Republican challenger former President Donald Trump. The GOP has not nominated a Black person or a woman for president to date, though Nikki Hayley made history in 2024 as the first woman and first South Asian person to win a Republican primary.

Trump signaled that he would not appear for a pre-scheduled second debate between him and Biden now that Harris has emerged as the most prominent Democratic candidate.

“Now that Joe has, not surprisingly, has quit the race, I think the Debate, with whomever the Radical Left Democrats choose, should be held on FoxNews, rather than very biased ABC,” Trump said via social media.

As Biden’s announcement Sunday, it was unclear whether Harris’ campaign had already begun the process of looking for a vice president for her presidential campaign.

However, fundraising emails sent to donors and a strong statement to the public made it clear that Harris has already taken steps to cement herself as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme agenda. If you’re with me, add a donation right now,” Harris said.

Biden is now with Trump being the first. Whether the former Republican president remains a four-year commander-in-chief will depend upon whether voters choose to send Harris, Trump or someone else to the White House in November.
