SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane police arrested a man after he allegedly stabbed his neighbor on Thursday afternoon.

SPD responded to the 2700 block of West Sunset Boulevard on a report of a stabbing. When they arrived the victim had already been transported to the hospital and the suspect was gone.

Police contacted the victim and discovered that he didn’t know the man who had stabbed him but he lived near him.

After reviewing camera footage of the stabbing police observed a man walking up to the victim in a parking lot, mumble something about owing him money and stab him in the arm.

The suspect fled before police could arrive but returned back to the area around 5 p.m. where officers then found him.

Police discovered the suspect was Richard E. Koons, 61, who was sitting in his car when police pinned and arrested him on first degree assault.

Koons was booked into Spokane County Jail and has a first appearance in court this afternoon.

The victim is being treated at a local hospital and is expected to recover.
