Miguel Valencia advancing to general election against Republican for state senator

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Valley voters will choose between Democrat Miguel Valencia and a Republican candidate when they send a new State Senator to the Washington Legislature in November.

As of Friday morning, State Representative Leonard Christian was in second place in a race that remains too close to call. Regardless of which candidate secures the second-place position, Valencia will face a Republican challenger in November.

Christian was and is hoping to snowball his 2022 ascension to the State House into a move into Padden’s office. Throughout his brief tenure in the House, he’s voiced opposition to business regulation and promoted protections for gun owners.

Fellow Republican candidate Mike Kelly stood within 500 votes of Christian Friday morning, meaning he could still edge-out his opponent in the final vote count.
