Kazakhstan’s tourism industry experienced a remarkable surge in 2023, with foreign tourist arrivals doubling to 9.2 million in just a year from 4.7 million in 2022.

The country also anticipates up to half a million Chinese tourists in 2024, and continues to attract visitors, thanks to visa-free entry for citizens of 82 countries and international flights to 29 countries on 108 routes.

The Khabar TV Channel reported on July 1 that Kazakhstan has dedicated more than five billion tenge or US $10.5 million to boost its tourism industry this year. This, in turn, will help remove many roadblocks to visiting the country.

Kazakhstan’s varied landscapes, from expansive steppes to stunning mountains, have grown popular with adventure lovers and nature fans. Government investments in tourism infrastructure, cultural events, and historic sites have also enhanced its attractiveness.

Must See Kazakh Locales

Last October, my husband and I visited the country of Kazakhstan, one of the largest landlocked countries in the world. Visitors to this offbeat travel destination cannot explore everything in one attempt, so tourists should construct organized schedules ahead of visits to ensure no sights go unseen.

Make these Kazakh spots part of your trip:

Saty

The small village of Saty is close to the Almaty airport, making it a logical starting point for nearby attraction exploration. Visitors should dedicate at least two to three days to Saty exploration; those only briefly stopping risk sacrificing views and experiences.

Saty’s natural attractions are its calling card. Kolsai Lakes, a group of three bodies of water in the Northern Tien Shan mountains, is a popular hiking destination. Kaindy Lake, famous for its submerged forest, appeared following an earthquake in 1911. The clear water provides a unique view of the underwater trees.

Charyn Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of Kazakhstan,” is a stunning 12 million-year-old natural wonder with dramatic rock formations and vibrant colors that attract adventurers and nature lovers worldwide. Walk up to the Charyn River and witness the valley of castles.

Altyn Emel National Park

Known for the Singing Dunes and ancient petroglyphs, Altyn Emel National Park also hosts diverse wildlife. It’s a significant site for both natural and historical exploration.

Issyk Lake

Located in the Ile-Alatau National Park, Issyk Lake is known for its turquoise waters and surrounding nature, making it ideal for a day trip or picnic.

Shymkent and Turkestan

Both destinations are among the most popular Kazakh tourist spots. Turkestan’s Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is a key cultural site near Shymkent, whose bustling, vibrant markets had historical significance on the Silk Route. You can also visit Otrar on the way.

Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve

As Kazakhstan’s oldest nature reserve, Aksu-Zhabagly is home to a variety of wildlife, including snow leopards and bears. It’s a can’t-miss destination for wildlife enthusiasts, sightseers, photographers, and nature lovers. We vacationed in Kazakhstan and recommend staying at Ruslan’s guesthouse for the best views and experience.

Make the Most Out of Your Trip

As someone who recently visited the country, here’s how I got the most out of my trip:

Translation App

In Kazakhstan, residents primarily speak Russian and Kazakh, which can pose a significant challenge for tourists who do not speak either language. Communication barriers can complicate even the simplest tasks, like reading menus or asking for directions. A translation app can bridge this gap, making your travel experience smoother and more enjoyable.

Yandex App

The Yandex app is an essential tool for tourists in Kazakhstan, offering the country’s most popular and reliable cab-booking service. With Yandex, visitors can easily navigate the city and travel anywhere without language barriers, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience.

Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from locals. Kazakh people are generally friendly and willing to help tourists. Whether you need directions or recommendations for places to visit, locals can provide valuable insights and make your trip more authentic.

Hire a Car

Renting a car is an excellent option for those who want to explore beyond the city limits. The freedom of a rental car allows you to visit more remote and scenic areas at your own pace. Ensure you have an international driving permit and familiarize yourself with local driving laws for a safe and hassle-free experience. You can use Hertz to book a car.

With these resources and tips, your journey through Kazakhstan will be smoother and more enriching, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty and culture of this rapidly emerging travel destination.
