MOSCOW, Idaho – The trial against Bryan Kohberger is set to take a significant step forward tomorrow with a change of venue hearing.
Attorneys will argue whether the trial should be held in Latah County. The prosecution believes a fair trial can occur in Latah County, while defense attorneys disagree.
Kristi and Steve Goncalves, parents of victim Kaylee Goncalves, want the trial to take place in the community where the crime happened.
“It would be devastating for me,” Kristi said. “It’s an insult. It would be an absolute insult because, you know, we are the victims and the crime happened here, and you have to prove that this community is biased, and I don’t think you can prove that,” said Steve.
Jim Siebe, a criminal defense attorney, explains what the defense will argue.
“The defense is going to point to the impartiality as they refer to it in the answers,” said Siebe.
“Trying to maintain that there was some deficiencies in the question and that the people in Latah County were probably even fairer than other counties,” Siebe said about the prosecution’s stance.
The hearing is set to start at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. The Goncalves family plans to attend in hopes that the trial remains in Latah County.
“It would be huge. We just feel so strongly about staying here to make it easier on, you know, the families, and, as he always says, this is where it happened, and the community deserves to be a part of that jury,” Kristi Goncalves said.
