SPOKANE, Wash. – Drivers in Spokane are being urged to be mindful of school zones as the new school year begins.
Shannon McGinnis, a resident of Spokane, expressed concern over frequent incidents involving distracted driving near schools. She said, “You have to be the voice for the kids, and the eyes for the kids so just pay attention to the kids.”
Spokane Public Schools Safety Officer Kaitlyn Painter highlighted the importance of safety in these areas. Painter recalled a recent incident, “Just last year a Spokane high schooler was hit by a car while crossing the street.” Painter emphasized the efforts being made to ensure student safety this year. “We’re really focused on running an emphasis in these areas around school,” she said. “We’re working in conjunction with SPD to make sure that we are having more of a presence in these areas to make sure that our kids are safe.”
Painter also pointed out the dangers of distracted driving. “Distracted driving can slow down your reaction time,” she said, noting that this increases the risk of accidents, especially in neighborhoods that fall within school zones.
McGinnis added, “Kids are unpredictable. Very unpredictable so you have to expect the unexpected.”
School zones will become active again on Sept. 3. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert and adjust their speeds accordingly to keep students safe.
