CARDIFF, Idaho – Two people have died following a gas station explosion in Cardiff.
According to a press release from the Idaho State Marshal’s Office, investigators are still working through the debris but it is confirmed that the two victims died as a result of the explosion.
Their bodies have been turned over to the Clearwater County Coroner’s Office. The names of the victims have not been released yet. The office also expressed wishes for a speedy recovery to the others injured in the incident.
, causing severe injuries to two individuals who were transported to a hospital by air ambulance. Clearwater County officials stated that emergency services were dispatched around 3 p.m. on Wednesday to the Cardiff gas station located on Highway 11. The two injured were flown to a hospital with severe burns. Initially, fire crews believed there might be additional victims inside the structure; it has now been confirmed that the two dead were the victims trapped in the station.
“It is still way too early to even speculate the cause of this tragic event,” said Idaho State Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl. “Piecing together the events leading up to the explosion and fire could take several weeks. We must be methodical and thorough.”
