Havre opens city-limit archery hunt to manage urban deer populations

HAVRE – The City of Havre has launched an urban deer management plan to address expanding deer populations within and adjacent to its city limits.

The plan includes an archery hunting opportunity targeting antlerless mule deer. This initiative aims to mitigate threats to human safety and property and reduce human-deer conflicts by lowering deer density in the area.

The city hunting dates are set from September 20, 2024, to February 15, 2025. Hunting is only allowed in specific approved areas, using compound and traditional bows as defined by current FWP hunting regulations. Crossbows are not allowed.

City-limit hunters must obtain a Havre Urban Deer License, available over the counter starting September 19, or use an unfilled mule deer license. Be sure to check you have the proper hunting license for this hunt with the Havre Police Department.

Hunters must check in with HPD at 520 4th Street before hunting to get a map with locations and rules. Daily written permission is required, and additional permission from individual landowners is necessary for approved private lands.

Harvested deer must be field dressed outside city limits with carcasses disposed of in class II landfills to prevent chronic wasting disease.

Deer displaced by human development often settle around homes and towns. They can cause problems such as property damage, crop destruction, and car accidents, leading to the management plan.
