Youth behavioral health campus in development in Gallatin County

BELGRADE, Mont. – A new initiative to support youth mental and behavioral health is underway in Gallatin County. A recently purchased campus, located in Belgrade, will soon serve local youths aged 11 to 18 who are experiencing behavioral health crises.

This project results from a collaborative effort involving the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) and Billings’ Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch. The aim is to offer crucial services within the community.

According to Kirsten Smith, the Gallatin behavioral health coalition coordinator, proximity to home is vital.

“Kids get better when they’re served in their community,” Smith said. “They can see their families, they can see their friends, and they can probably go to their school.”

“Otherwise, they’re transitioning away, and then they’re transitioning back home,” Smith continued. “There’s a lot of trauma and disruption in those transitions.”

When operational, the campus will assess patients’ needs, provide stabilization, and guide them to appropriate resources. The long-term goal includes offering educational services for extended stays and enhanced home support.

Statistics underline the urgent necessity for such a facility. In the past year, 14% of teenagers in Gallatin County have attempted suicide, and 21% have considered it seriously

“The need is strong,” Smith said. “We’re losing kids. We’re losing friends and family members. We have to do more, and this is a step in doing that.”

The project requires additional community funding. Gallatin County has contributed $1.5 million, but further donations are needed to meet the $5 million target.

The campus expects to open in approximately 12 to 18 months. Those interested in contributing to the fundraising efforts, touring the property, or seeking further details about the project can find more information online at the HRDC’s website.
