MOSCOW, Idaho — The Latah County Sheriff’s Office has addressed rumors regarding the potential closure of the Latah County Jail, stating that no decision has been made yet.
“The Latah County Jail was built in 1973 according to the standards of the day, which is nowhere close to current jail standards. Late this summer, we were notified by the Moscow Fire Department of several issues regarding fire egress and fire suppression systems in the Latah County Jail. While some of these systems can be remedied at great taxpayer expense, there are several that cannot be repaired and therefore could create a severe liability for Latah County as a whole,” the post said.
The office also noted that the Board of County Commissioners plans to address this topic publicly at their next meeting on Oct. 8.
