Local chefs unite for charity cook-off to aid hospitality workers

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The nonprofit organization CD Aide is gearing up for an exciting culinary competition, with local chefs set to compete in a cook-off later this week. The event aims to raise funds to support hospitality workers facing hardships.

Chef Reannan Keene, owner of Izzy’s Comfort Kitchen in Coeur d’Alene, is among those participating. Keene shared her appreciation for the work CD Aide is doing. “What I love about the CD AIDE organization is bridging that gap between working yourself to the bone… not having enough… and trying to find some peace and comfort along with it,” she said.

The cook-off competition, taking place on Thursday, will feature four chefs and three judges. The event not only showcases culinary talents but also aims to raise money for a worthy cause. A significant part of the proceeds will go towards supporting hospitality workers affected by crises such as the devastating fire at the Wolf Lodge.

CD Aide has already assisted seven Wolf Lodge employees, including two chefs and five servers, with over $15,000 in support. This aid primarily helped cover rent for workers transitioning between jobs and waiting for paychecks. However, the organization’s efforts extend beyond rent assistance. They provide help with medical, dental, auto, or utility bills, vital during the colder months when the hospitality industry experiences slowdowns.

“We’re a tourist town and all the tourists go away… the hospitality industry is particularly hit by this… so your hours may reduce… your tips may reduce,” said an organizer, highlighting the seasonal challenges faced by workers.

Keene is busy preparing for Thursday’s event, and her story adds an emotional layer to the competition. Her restaurant, Izzy’s Comfort Kitchen, is named in honor of her late daughter, Izzy, who tragically passed away before her birth. “I know it’s heavy and I know it’s hard, but that is my story. She came into this world quiet and my job is to make her voice sing from the heavens,” said Keene about her daughter.

The restaurant represents Izzy in many ways, and Keene believes Izzy will be watching as she competes in the cook-off.

Tickets for the event are limited. Donations can also be made by visiting cdaide.org.
