RITZVILLE, Wash. – Adams County deputies are asking for assistance in locating a man accused of attacking a woman and a Ritzville police officer with a knife before fleeing.

The incident began when an officer from the Ritzville Police Department responded to a domestic dispute near 2nd and Lewis Street. A man reportedly hit a woman, prompting the police response, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

During the investigation, Brian Sumner, 45, allegedly interfered with the officer’s efforts to speak with the female victim. Police say Sumner pulled a knife and tried to stab both the officer and the woman, attempting to place the knife in her chest. A nearby citizen intervened, helping to move the woman away from Sumner’s reach.

Authorities stated that Sumner fled on foot, with police attempting to taser him without success. Sumner then got into his car and drove away at high speed. Attempts to catch him were unsuccessful due to his dangerous driving.

Law enforcement confirmed there were no injuries but continue to search for Sumner. Police mentioned he frequents the town of Sprague.

There is probable cause to arrest Sumner on charges of three counts of first-degree assault, one count of third-degree assault, obstructing a public servant, resisting arrest and felony eluding.

Anyone with information on Sumner’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Adams County Dispatch at 509-659-1122.
