The City of Spokane is seeing an overall decrease in crime. That’s according to the most recent Incident-Based Reporting numbers published October 7.
It shows overall crime is down in 2024 compared to the same period of January 1 – October 5, 2023.
Citywide violent crime is down more than 5%. Each category identified as violent crime is down at least 7% with the exception of robbery, which appears flat year-to-year, and domestic violence aggravated assault, which is up just over 2% from 2023.
Property crime is also down across the board by at least 9%, with the exception of arson which is up nearly 60% year-to-year with 110 arsons reported as of Oct. 5, compared to 69 in 2023.
But when you drill down to Northwest Precinct’s Adam Sector, the numbers largely move the other way when you look at violent crime reports.
Homicides, robbery and assault are all up. When factored together, these violent crimes have been reported nearly 9.5% more than for the same time frame in 2023. Homicides in that time have doubled from two to four robbery is up 40% in the commercial category and 21% in the person category.
Meanwhile, the district has seen a decline in non-violent crime or property crime. Residential burglary is down 19% and commercial burglary is down 17%. Vehicle theft is also down 17%. However arson reports are up 88% with 34 reports in 2024 compared to 2023.
The North Central District encompasses much of downtown Spokane. The year-to-year numbers show violent crime here is up 7% with much of that increase attributed to a rise in robberies and aggravated assault. Robberies targeting individuals are up 46% on their own with 22 in 2024 compared to 15 in 2023. As far as non-violent crimes, reports increased 5.8% so far this year. The largest jump came from reported arsons which are up 190% with 29 reports so far in 2024 compared to 10 in 2023.
