SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Spokane Valley deputies arrested a man after he reportedly broke into a home while the owner was asleep.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a burglary at North Adams and East Riverside Lane. A woman had encountered an unknown man in her home.

The victim reported being awakened by an unfamiliar voice outside her bedroom. Initially thinking it might be her son, she opened her bedroom door and confronted the intruder as he exited a guest room. The victim screamed, prompting the suspect to flee on foot. She then called her son to notify authorities and barricaded the front door until deputies arrived. The front door had been forced open.

Spokane Valley deputies established a perimeter with assistance from Spokane County deputies and Liberty Lake police. A K9 unit was requested to aid in the search for the suspect.

At around 1:30 a.m., deputies received a report of a man in a nearby driveway matching the suspect’s description. Upon arrival, they detained Autin Kelly, 22, who appeared highly intoxicated and claimed to have been assaulted and shot. While deputies noted scratches on Kelly’s face and legs, no gunshot wounds were found.

Medics were called to assess Kelly due to his erratic behavior and claims of injury. The burglary victim was later transported to the scene and confirmed that Kelly was the individual she had seen in her home.

After being medically cleared, deputies booked Kelly into the Spokane County Jail on charges of residential burglary and third-degree malicious mischief.
