SPOKANE, Wash. – YWCA Spokane and YMCA are coming together to revamp the garden at their Monroe location, aiming to better serve local families.

The project focuses on planting edible plants, including spices, squash, and tomatoes. The garden will serve multiple purposes, benefiting various community groups.

YWCA plans to use the garden for educational purposes by teaching children ages 3-4 how to grow plants through hands-on activities. Additionally, the garden will offer holistic wellness activities for YWCA service recipients, providing a space for healing and peace.

YMCA is also involved, intending to incorporate freshly grown produce into their hunger initiatives to reduce the community’s hunger gap.

Anita Sather with YWCA Spokane expressed her vision for the garden, saying, “I would love to see a beacon of hope… a beacon of growth… and harvest… and a welcoming that they can go in and they can sit in a garden of peace.”

There will be a restoration event at the YMCA on Monroe from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today, inviting the community to participate in revitalizing the space.
