PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University received a $670,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to address cannabis misuse.

According to WSU, the funding will allow researchers to test new avenues for preventing the misuse of edibles and other forms of marijuana over a three year period.

“Researchers will refine and test a technology-based intervention aimed at young people in three states where cannabis has been legalized,” a WSU press release said.

Murrow College of Communication researchers will look into how misunderstandings of cannabis can lead to drug abuse, and ways to educate young people about those dangers.

“What our prior research has shown is that adolescents and young adults are not necessarily educated consumers when it comes to cannabis,” researcher Stacey Hust said.

Focus groups and tests with larger groups of young adults will allow Hust and co-researcher Jessica Willoughby to gather more data on the impact of cannabis on young people, as well as new ways to combat misuse.
