Spokane Brake and Suspension shops shares The Golden Rule

SPOKANE, Wash. – In a city where family-owned businesses are cherished, Golden Rule Brake in Spokane stands out for its commitment to spreading positivity.

Owner Dallas Low views his business as more than just a brake and suspension shop. “The Golden Rule is from the Bible,” Low said. He aims to embody this principle: “Treat others the way you’d want to be treated.”

This ethos has been passed down through three generations, starting with his grandfather in 1954.

“My hope is that through our hard work and our honesty and our decency, that we would inspire other people to be honest with each other,” Low said.

Each week, the shop changes its storefront sign across multiple locations – a different message pointing in each direction. Rather than promoting the business, the messages aim to uplift and inspire the city.

“I love putting the funny stuff up. But it’s more important, frankly, to me to when I’m able to put something that really makes you think,” Low said.

For some, a simple sign goes a long way. Leval Delano has been homeless for years batting addiction; he looks forward to the updated Golden Rule Brake sign whenever he crosses the Monroe Street Bridge.

“I’ve always known about the signs,” Delano said. “It’s the little things in life that we overlook.”

The tradition of sharing messages began 30 years ago in an effort to have a positive voice in the community. Golden Rule Brake is also planning to expand, with eyes on a new location in Coeur d’Alene.
