PHOENIX, Ariz. – Just 11 days ahead of Election Day, more than a dozen electoral ballots were damaged in Phoenix. Authorities say someone set fire to a U.S. Postal Service collection box early Thursday morning.
A Phoenix fire captain revealed that the fire was started inside a drive-up collection box located on post office property. Crews opened the box to extinguish the flames, resulting in damage to 20 ballots and other pieces of mail.
The postal inspector has taken possession of the damaged items. In a post on social media Thursday afternoon, the Phoenix mayor announced that a suspect has been arrested.
The 35-year-old man arrested Thursday confessed to authorities, stating he committed the crime because “he wanted to be arrested.”
Investigators currently believe that the incident was not politically motivated.
