WHITMAN COUNTY, Wash. – Whitman County Public Health issued a health alert for a whooping cough outbreak amongst Washington State University students Friday.
According to the county, 37 cases of pertussis have been identified, all of them contained to the WSU community.
“Person-to-person spread of pertussis occurs through small drops of spit from your mouth or nose when you talk, cough, or sneeze. Spread is most likely among people who live together or people who spend time together indoors,” WCPH said.
Immunization is the surest way to prevent the spread of whooping cough. Making sure that you are up to date on your vaccinations is an important component of preventing the spread of the ailment according to the Spokane Regional Health District.
Health alerts signify public health information that requires immediate action or attention, including isolating for 5 days and seeking medical attention if you are diagnosed with whooping cough.
