Hamilton school district seeks approval for middle school sale

HAMILTON, Mont. – The Hamilton School District is asking voters to approve the sale of Hamilton Middle School on November 5, 2024. The school board believes this decision is necessary to enhance conditions for the school and its surrounding community.

“That’s at the heart of all of our decision making. How is it going to impact our students, our staff, their families in our community,” said Principal Andrea Gray.

The proceeds from this potential sale could fund a new campus or building, subject to voter approval. One potential site is the Westview area in Hamilton, where the old football stadium once stood and where Bitter Root College is located.

In the past, the school district’s request for a bond was rejected. However, the board views this sale as a better alternative. They aim to maintain operations in the existing facility until a new building is ready, minimizing disruptions to the school year.

“We will look to opportunities to maintain it as long as we can here while something is being built or renovated. So we wouldn’t interrupt the school year and have to do things like temporary buildings which we do not want to do,” said Patrick Hanley, the school board chair.

He also emphasized the need for community support to improve conditions for students, parents, and staff at Hamilton Middle School. He stated that teachers excel at their jobs, but the current facilities, including outdated classrooms, old buildings, and limited natural light, are inadequate for providing a quality learning experience.

Parents and Gray have voiced concerns, noting that the school’s infrastructure lacks natural light, has an outdated building, and features a playground of only concrete space. This initiative aims to address these issues and improve the overall environment for the middle school community.
