CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington University (EWU) will unveil a special helmet decal featuring a Salish phrase during their game against Montana State in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.
EWU Athletics said that they have partnered with the Kalispel Tribe of Indians and Northern Quest Resort & Casino to introduce the decal for the football team’s game on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. The decal showcases the Salish phrase “uł pql̓qeyn,” which translates to “group of eagles.”
This initiative is part of the university’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month, with collaboration from the American Indian Studies Program and the Native American Student Association.
“We are fortunate to live in an area with deep ties to Native American land, heritage, and culture,” said Tim Collins, Director of Athletics. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with partners like the Kalispel Tribe of Indians and Northern Quest Resort & Casino. EWU Athletics thanks them for their support, and we look forward to creating additional outreach opportunities within our region’s tribal communities in the future.”
Fans will receive a game day rooter card featuring the helmet design, while the first 1,000 attendees will have the chance to celebrate the Tribe’s contributions to the community. A Land Acknowledgement will be presented by Sebastian Whiz-Smartlowit, an EWU student and member of the Yakama Nation, before the Salish National Anthem is sung by 11-year-old Oakley Bluff, a Kalispel descendant. Halftime will include a traditional Jingle Dance performed by Feather Auld, Miss Qlispé.
Additionally, Cusick Junior High and High School football players will enjoy a pre-game tailgate experience. For tickets to the game, visit goeags.com/tickets.
“As long-time supporters and partners of EWU Athletics, we’re thrilled to celebrate the kickoff of Native American Heritage Month with this collaborative effort that honors our Salish language,” said Nick Pierre, General Manager of Northern Quest and Kalispel Tribal Council member. “We’re proud of our partnership with the Eagles and are grateful for the opportunity to share some of our Kalispel cultural traditions with Eagles fans on gameday.”
