Spokane County residents report mail theft after break-in at communal mailbox

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – A communal mailbox for residents of a Spokane County cul-de-sac was broken into late Monday or early Tuesday morning, with residents reporting that important mail was stolen.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) told NonStop Local that at least three households on Wall Court have reported possible mail theft from the mailbox. Neighbors believe someone may have pried the box open.

Residents say stolen items include checks, prescription medications, bank documents, and other personal mail. Some express concern about potential identity theft, as documents containing personal information were among the stolen items.

A spokesperson for the United States Postal Service (USPS) told NonStop Local that the mailbox is owned by the cul-de-sac community, but USPS has ordered new units to replace it. The new mailboxes are expected to arrive late next week.
