Survey: Spokane residents support nature-based playground at Finch Arboretum after willow tree fall

SPOKANE, Wash. – The City of Spokane Parks and Recreation recently completed a survey asking the public what should be done with Finch Arboretum’s 78-year-old willow tree, which succumbed to gravity and age earlier this year. The majority of respondents expressed a desire to see a park created from the remains of the old willow tree.

According to a press release from Parks and Recreation, more than 1,000 people participated in the survey, with 65% of respondents favoring the creation of a nature-based playground that incorporates willow wood components and replacement trees grown from cuttings of the original tree.

The department announced that community members can expect to see design concepts for the nature-based play area in the coming months. A timeline for construction will be determined once funding becomes available. Those wishing to contribute to the project can donate via the provided link.

Additionally, the department is inviting the community to share their photos and memories of the willow tree to be included in a photo mosaic for future display at the arboretum. People can participate through this link.
