SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane experienced its first snowfall of the season last night, prompting residents to focus on the challenges of driving in snowy conditions.
Morgan Draca, a Spokane resident and new mother, shared her concerns about driving in winter weather. “I’m a little bit nervous, however, to be out and about especially with having a baby,” she said. Draca emphasized the added layer of anxiety that comes with being a new parent on icy roads. “Being a new mom adds a layer of nervousness just because I can account for myself, but I can’t account for everyone else out there,” she added.
Bud Brown, owner of Spokane Mobile Tire and Wheel, highlighted the importance of considering others while driving in winter conditions. “Consider the fact that other people have families too,” he said. Brown noted that after Spokane’s first snowfall on Saturday, appointments for snow tires are quickly filling up.
According to the Spokesman Review, last year’s first major snowfall in Spokane resulted in 85 reported collisions in just one day, including a fatal crash. Brown observed, “There’s a lot of accidents already starting to happen. You know, mentally people are just in a frenzy.”
Draca offered advice for new or nervous drivers: “My advice is get practice. Ask advice, be ready and if you can, stay home.”
Brown also recommended slowing down and allowing extra time for travel, as well as maintaining a safe distance between cars on the road.
