SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane man was arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting that occurred in September at Cannon Park.
The suspect who was identified as Emmanuel Braxton, 25, is facing multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree assault, one count of drive-by shooting, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest.
According to court docs, police responded to reports of a drive-by shooting near Cannon Park around 2 p.m. on Sept. 28. Witnesses told police they saw a car, which was later identified as the suspect vehicle, in the area at the time of the shooting. One witness said they reported seeing a man exit the passenger side of the car holding a black semi-automatic pistol. The witness said he saw the suspect walk to the driver’s side of the car, which then moved forward, with the suspect walking alongside.
Several other witnesses in the court docs said that they described hearing gunshots and seeing the car speeding away from the scene, with its rear windshield shattered. Witnesses also reported seeing another car pursuing the suspect’s car as the two cars fled the area, according to court docs.
Court docs said that police obtained a search warrant on Oct. 9 for the car, which was seized from a property on Napa Street. Officers said that they found evidence inside the car, including shell casings and bullet fragments. The car showed clear signs of being shot at, with multiple bullet holes on the driver’s side, including one in the window, according to court docs.
On Sunday, police said that they located and attempted to arrest Braxton at an apartment on Elliott Drive. Braxton initially fled from officers but was detained shortly afterward. Following his arrest, he reportedly admitted to being involved in the shooting and said that he was driving the Malibu at the time. Braxton alleged that the occupants of another vehicle fired at them first, leading to the chase and subsequent shooting.
According to court docs, police searched Braxton’s apartment and found a Smith & Wesson pistol, which they believe was used in the shooting. Braxton, who has a previous criminal history involving aggravated assault charges, also faces a warrant for a non-extraditable offense in Georgia.
Braxton remains in custody, and the investigation is ongoing. No other suspects, including the passengers in the Malibu, have come forward to provide statements.
