SPOKANE, Wash. – As colder weather sets in and roads begin to freeze overnight, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) East is offering crucial safety advice for drivers.
Joe McHale from WSDOT East emphasized the importance of safe driving practices during the winter months. “It helps you stay safe, it helps others stay safe and helps keep the road open,” he said.
WSDOT East advises drivers to plan their travel more carefully as the roads become slick. They recommend slowing down and maintaining a safe distance from the car in front, as sudden stops might be necessary.
Drivers are also encouraged to ensure their tires have good traction, especially when traveling over mountain passes. Packing an emergency bag with water and winter gear is also advised in case of being stranded.
Checking car fluids and weather conditions before setting out is crucial for safe travel. “If you follow those tips, if you slow down a little bit, take your time, plan ahead, you’ll get to where you need to go safely, and that’s why it’s really important,” McHale added.
As snow plows become more active, WSDOT East highlights the need for extra caution around them. Plows have larger blind spots than regular cars, so giving them ample space to maneuver is essential.
Drivers should avoid passing on the right, where plows are pushing snow and ice. Plows often travel at 30 mph or less to effectively spread deicing products.
McHale warned, “Not only are you putting yourself or our plow driver in danger, but you’re taking that piece of equipment off of the road when they could be out there plowing.”
To enhance visibility, WSDOT East is adding green lights to the back of plows this year. This measure aims to improve safety for all road users.
