MONTANA – New funding is set to improve the safety of roads and streets in rural and tribal areas across the state.

Montana State University announced that the funding comes from a $4.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to the Western Transportation Institute at MSU.

The Western Transportation Institute plans to use the funds to improve traffic and transportation safety along corridors serving rural counties, communities, and reservations.

The initiative will include creating two county safety action plans and updating regional safety action plans.

Efforts will focus on planning safe routes to schools, providing traffic calming measures, and offering messaging and education.
