Bird flu showing signs of human adaptation

CANADA.-A teenager in Canada has tested positive for a mutated form of bird flu that could more easily infect humans.

The teenager has been hospitalized with a strain of the H5N1 avian influenza that has mutated in key areas that could make it easier to attach to human cells.

The teen, who had no contact with wild birds is reportedly in critical, but stable condition and there is no indication the virus has spread to any other humans, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The strain that the teenager contracted is reportedly similar to the strain found in flocks in the Northwest recently, including in Washington State.
