SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – A former Spokesman-Review editor will face a plea hearing on multiple child exploitation charges.
Steven Smith, who previously served as executive director of the Spokesman Review from 2002 to 2008, is accused of purchasing child sex abuse material from children over social media.
In August 2023, the former editor and University of Idaho journalism professor pleaded not guilty to the charges. The plea hearing is scheduled before a Spokane County Superior Court judge on Tuesday.
Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Smith was preparing for a sentencing hearing rather than a plea hearing.
