PULLMAN, Wash. — The Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office is set to consider whether charges should be taken up against a Washington State University police officer who shot at an allegedly armed student in March.
The student, 20-year-old John Bazan, . Police said Bazan had charged at WSU police officer Dillon Tideman-Mueller and other officers, at which point .
Officers responded to the Global Scholars residence hall on the morning of March 27 after Bazan called them on himself.
After police detained him, Bazan was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
According to information in the Washington courts online case search, police found cause to arrest Bazan, but no charges were ultimately filed against him in superior court.
An independent team made up of law enforcement agencies across southeast Washington investigated the use of force. The team, known as the Palouse Area law Enforcement Critical Incident Response team, was created in response to a state law meant to reform how police uses of force are investigated.
A spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol, which headed up the investigation, announced on Friday that it had been completed.
Now Tideman-Mueller’s fate is in the hands of Whitman County Prosecutor Denis Tracy. Tracy will determine whether the use of force in this incident was legally justified.
