Two loved-up tawny owls have been pictured in their love-nest box at a nature reserve.

The pair started calling to one another from separate owl boxes on opposite sides of Maiden Erlegh Nature Reserve in Berkshire, a few months ago.

Now in December, the pair – affectionately named Romeo and Juliet – have been photographed snuggled up together sharing one box.

There are hopes their next chapter could see the arrival of some owlets.

The reserve posted the cute photo of the two love birds side by side and wrote: “Did you know that the famous ‘twit twoo’ sound is not actually made by one owl, but by a pair?

“The female tawny owl makes the sharp ‘ke-wick’ (twit) sound, while the male responds with a wavering ‘hoo-hoo’ (twoo).”
