Frightening Stats from SCRAPS

It’s frightening how many pets in Spokane County aren’t licensed.  Of the estimated 250,000 pets living in our community only 55,000 have a license that is required by law.

This October, SCRAPS is offering a treat to pet owners.  The shelter will waive late fees and penalties all month long.

Now the trick is to get pet owners to understand the benefits of licensing and come forward to help their pets.

“Pet licensing is a very important part of what we do here at SCRAPS”, said Nancy Hill, the Executive Director of SCRAPS.  “It’s your pet’s phone call home in case they get lost or stolen, and helps fund some incredible programs.”

Many pet owners don’t realize that licensing their pet is mandatory in Spokane County – that includes both cats and dogs.  It is required by law for all animals over 6 months of age, and owners can face a $200 penalty if their animals aren’t in compliance.

In addition to providing owner information for your pet, there are many other benefits to having a licensed pet:

  • Animal Protection Officers can look up a pet license and get owner information 24/7
  • Pet licensing funds SCRAPS spay/neuter voucher program

Licenses can be purchased online or at SCRAPS, which is located at 6815 E. Trent Ave in Spokane Valley.
